I've had some positive responses to a work in progress, which has been a passion project for many years. The novel celebrates the Sydney gay scene in the decade me and my husband first got together— the 1990s.

Several years back I had it professionally assessed and was told I concentrated too much on nostalgia, and not enough on plot. She was right. I even researched the 90s gay street press from microfilm which was set aside for me by staff at the State Library of NSW.

In the past two years, I've added new scenes, scrapped others, and delayed the introduction of a character to strengthen a theme my assessor suggested was already there. Beneath the nostalgia, she understood this was a story exploring the nature of friendship.

I have a weekly writers group where, this year, a new female member joined. I know my main readership are women and gay men, but it was refreshing to experience first hand, how this new writer responded to the text.

She'd often remember plot points I'd mentioned in earlier scenes, while I tried to remember if they'd been dropped in my rewrites. Her focus on my story was refreshing, and she even understood different character's motives before those motives were revealed in later scenes.

Several weeks ago, a gay writer who, is only four years younger than me, joined. He's been enjoying this walk down memory lane, and even reminded me that the Manacle, a leather men-only bar, used to serve complimentary unshelled peanuts and had a motorcycle as part of its decor.

The manuscript is being tweaked, so keep an eye out for it in the future.
